Putting it Together

I started doing this for no reason at all. I just really like clothes and talking about the bargains I’ve scored. So I’m going to take pictures of the outfits I’m particularly proud of and talk about them here. Cool? Great, thanks.

Also, I’m in Time Out New York’s 2012 list of Stylish New Yorkers, so that’s cool.

5.10.12

It was warm for a spell so I went on the roof!

Jean Dress: Vancouver, BC

My bestie Nicole made me buy this, and I’m so glad she did. Doppelganger was in Vancouver for the Vancouver International Improv Festival, and we shopped a lot, duh.

Africa Tank: gift

Yes, that is Mother Africa peeking through the back of my dress. I’m not sure where it’s from. My friend Melissa gave to me as a birthday present a couple years ago. This is actually the front of the shirt, but I turned it around because I wanted something interesting to show in the opening of the dress.

Shoes: Dolce Vita

Sunglasses: Goodwill in Indianapolis, IN

And that’s it! Gonna enjoy this day now :)

5.6.12 My Birthday!

Yay!

Dress and Leggings: Gary Graham

I had to go to work today so I had to wear items from the GG Collection, but I’m not complaining. This dress looks great. It’s silk organza and a pink slip was sewn underneath. I got lots of compliments on this.

Shoes: Dolce Vita (my old faithfuls)

And this is the picture I took of my birthday outfit from last year! I started this blog the day before my birthday.

I don’t think much has changed from last year’s picture to this year’s. I’m still in the same apartment (it was just gloomy today so I couldn’t go on my roof), I got a haircut, and another tattoo. But a lot of life stuff has changed, and for the better. Things have gotten really good over the year, and it’s only getting better. I feel like I’m working all the time, BUT I’m having a blast right now :)

4.25.12

Hi!

Blue Tiger Strip Top: Thrift Store at Oberlin

Doppelganger went to Oberlin College last month to perform and teach workshops, and go shopping of course. I got this and some other great goodies from that shop.

Patent Leather Belt: My mom’s closet

Leopard Body Suit: Beacon’s Closet

Those aren’t leggings! It’s a bodysuit! I wanted the pattern to peak out from the top of my shirt and down below my skirt.

My bestie, Nicole, made me buy this and it’s always been a hit when I wear it. Though, the downfall of bodysuits is that I have to take off all my clothes to go to the bathroom. I tried to go to do that after I took these photos and decided to leave the belt at home. It was just making everything harder. And life is already hard, right guys?

Skirt: My roommate Veronica was getting rid of this so I took it. So, thanks!

This is what I decided to do on my feet. I probably would’ve gone with some sort of heel, but I had an improv show that night (Doppelganger’s weekly show at UCB East), and I wanted to wear shoes I know I can perform in.

Socks: Macy’s

Shoes: I bought some cheap black Ked-like shoes from Payless and spray painted them gold. I like the way they look now. I’ve worn them so much that the paint has worn off a bit and you can see the black underneath.

And that’s it! Catch ya later!

3.30.12

So, it’s been a while since I’ve done this, but I’m going to try to do it more often.

Also, two things have changed since my last post:

1) I started working at Gary Graham and we have to wear the line to work, so this whole outfit is from GG!

2) I got a haircut! I went to Tomcats Barber Shop in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. I went because they have a really cool vibe, it’s cheap, and I have a lot of friends who have gone there and loved it. And now I see why!

Tortoise Shell Reflector Sunglasses: Goodwill, Indianapolis

Earrings: Some thrift store in Edmonton, Alberta

Vest, bodysuit and skirt: Gary Graham

Belt: From my mom’s closet

Boots: Naturalize from Macy’s

Leggings: So Fine Leggings from Only Hearts

I was also in Central Park for this photo shoot. Hello, Spring!

1.20.12

Levi Stauss Button Down: Goodwill in Indianapolis, IN

Teal Tank: Value Village in Vancouver, BC

Patent Leather Belt: From my mom’s closet

Wilson’s Leather Suede Skirt: Buffalo Exchange in San Francisco

Black So Fine Leggings: Only Hearts

Shoes: Dolce Vita

Gold Socks: Macy’s

(Please ignore the dog hair all over my legs)

Oh there I am. Hi.

1.18.12

Sweet polyester!

Blue Polyester Button Down: From my mom’s closet

Patent Leather Belt: From my mom’s closet

Nylon and Lace Slip: Some thrift store in Atlanta, GA

I put a slip under the shirt and skirt to ease flow of the skirt and to show some lace at the top. I making the top of this skirt peek through my tops because it’s cuuute!

Polyester Skirt: Goodwill in Indianapolis, IN

Leggings: Only Hearts

Socks: Macy’s

Shoes: Dolce Vita

Yay! I did it!

1.6.12

Another sunny day in Cali.

Silk Button-down Shirt: From this Mexican thrift store in the Valley my friend Annie showed me.

Sunglasses: Goodwill in Indianapolis

This is me in the Santa Monica location of the store I work at, Only Hearts.

High-Waist Acid Wash Jeans: Decadence in Edmonton, Alberta

Belt: Used to be my mom’s

Shoes: Dolce Vita (they’re the only ones I brought on this trip, which is fine b/c they work with everything!)

I also went to the beach in this outfit! What a day!

1.4.12

Still in LA, and I’m wearing shorts!

Plaid Shirt: Brooklyn thrift store, called “Thrift Store”

Teal Tank: Value Village in Vancouver, BC

High-Waist Shorts: Goodwill in Hollywood

Blue Belt: Used to be my mom’s

Shoes: Dolce Vita

Sunglasses: Goodwill in Indianapolis

I can’t believe how warm it is. Better enjoy as much as I can before I go back to frigid NY.

In other news, I figured out how to boost the colors in the pictures I take. Shit’s gonna get crazy in 2012.

1.3.12

Happy New Year!

Doppelganger is in LA this week and it’s super sunny and nature-like. Look at all this green stuff around me!

Plaid Shirt: This thrift store near me in Greenpoint. It’s called “Thrift Store.”

Beige T-Shirt: Forever 21

Compass Necklace: My store was selling compass key chains for a while. I bought one, put it on a key ring, put a chain through it and called it a necklace!

Tortoise Reflector Sunglasses: Goodwill in Indianapolis. $3, BOOM.

Grey Stud Earrings: Some thrift store in Vancouver

Jean Shorts: These are an old pair of jeans I wore in high school. They had rips in the thighs (because I wear clothes until they die), so I cut the legs off to make shorts.

Leggings: Forever 21

Shoes: Dolce Vita

Gold Socks: Hue, I think from Macy’s

I’ve been wearing socks over my leggings lately (and so has everyone else, it’s trending right now). I like wearing leggings more than tights, but what do you do when you’re not wearing boots and you don’t want your ankles to show? Put a pair of colorful socks over them to cover that gap! Problem solved. Yay!

Now excuse me while I go soak up the sun!

12.9.11

Hi again! Here’s another outfit in my sunny apartment!

Velvet Jacket: I got this at an estate sale in Maryland. Some old lady died and I bought a lot of her clothes. This jacket came with a matching skirt, but I never wear them together because that would be TOO much!

Tank Dress: Only Hearts

Velveteen Pants: Salvation Army in Atlanta, GA. These are Jones New York pants. I think they’re work out pants, but I wear them for casual pleasure!

Feather Earring: I bought a pack of feathers from the craft store in my neighborhood and attached them to hook earrings. It was really simple and only cost $5.

Boots: Naturalize boots. I got these in Columbia, SC. My Aunt Joann bought these for me from Macy’s during our Black Friday midnight excursion. This was my first time going Black Friday shopping on Thanksgiving. It was weird and overwhelming, I don’t think I’ll do it again. But I did get these boots!

And that’s it. Gonna go enjoy this unusually warm and sunny December day!

10.18.11

This is what I wore on 10.18.11, but I’m posting this on 11.26.11 :P

I’ve been really busyyyy, and this outfit is from one of the busiest days of my life. Just lots of auditions and meetings and shows and stuff. Which is GOOD, but tiring. I took pictures of this outfit in the bathroom before one of my auditions that day.

Green Button Down Shirt: Goodwill in Boston

Featherweight 3/4 Sleeve Top: From my store, Only Hearts

Belt: My mom’s closet

High Waist Paisley Skirt: Goodwill in Boston

Here’s the paisley pattern up close. Isn’t it cute?!

Grey Hue Tights: From Only Hearts, but they’re sold everywhere

Shoes: Dolce Vita. Again, bought them from my store but they’re sold in other locations as well.

And that’s it! I’m still really busy, but I’m going to try to keep doing these because it’s fun. See you later, Internet!

9.12.11

Another busy day at Only Hearts! Taking pics outside the store with Ali.

Vest: Army/Navy store or something ($3)

Orange Tank: My mom’s closet

Belt: My mom’s closet

Pants: Got them from the Only Hearts sample sale. They were only $9 with my discount. They make me very happy.

I got lazy and didn’t take another pic, so I cropped this one so you can see the accessories.

Bow: Target or something. It’s a ribbon that I looped around a hair lip and clipped in my hair.

Gold Feather Earring: Rag-O-Rama in Atlanta, GA

Doppelganger was invited to perform in Dad’s Garage’s World Domination Theatre Sports Competition last week. We had a blast, and of course, went shopping.

Shoes: I don’t remember the brand, but I got them from Rack Room Shoes.

Alright, back to work!

9.4.11

Hey therrrre. I had my camera with me at work, Only Hearts, so I took some pictures of my outfit out on our patio. If my manager sees this, know that I was working really hard before and after this photo shoot.

Shirt: I don’t remember. I’ve had this shirt for so long. Probably Forever 21 or a store like it.

Belt: Used to be my mom’s.

Skirt: Used to be my mom’s. I had to wait for my waist to get small enough to fit in this skirt (and it’s still a little tight). My mom wore this skirt when she was around my age. She was thinner at that age than I am now, and will make it a point to remind me of that whenever she has a chance :)

But I wore it because I want to. I love that it buttons all the way down, and I got it hemmed because I’m modern and we’re not in the 70s anymore.

Stud Earring: At some thrift store in Canada during Doppelganger’s festival run. I lost the other one, and I think it was this loss that inspired me to start wearing different earrings, because I like this one so much and wanted to keep wearing it.

Chandelier Earring: I think I got it from Claire’s.

BFF Necklace: Yas, who works at the Only Hearts location in Santa Monica, makes jewelry from vintage charms and sent this and other great pieces to our store in New York. I jumped on this as soon as I saw it.

Bow: It’s a ribbon (maybe from Target?) that I usually wrap around my head, but I tied it in a bunch of bows and looped it around a hair clip. That way I can clip it on the side of my head, instead of the usual wrap around.

Shoes: You know, I don’t know what brand these are. It doesn’t say on the shoe, but I got them from Rack Room Shoes. And they’re super comfortable! They have traction on the bottom and bend with my foot. Man, I wish I could tell you the brand name so you could get them. Oh well.

And that’s it. Back to work!

8.30.11

Oh hey, what’s up? Oh me, I’m just taking pictures of myself in my room. You know, what most normal people do on a Wednesday night.

Dress: My bestie Nicole gave me this dress. It used to belong to her roommate.

Orange Tank: Used to be my mom’s. I put it under the dress so you can’t see my bra because the dress scoops low in the back.

Earring: I think it used to belong to my stepmom.

BFF Necklace: I got it from my store Only Hearts. Yas, who works at our Santa Monica location, reconstucts vintage charms and sent this one to our store along with some other great pieces. Nicole has the other half of this necklace :)

Bow: I used to wear it as a kid. I don’t know where it came from.

Pearl Earring: My mom got it for me a long time ago. It’s not real pearl.

Shoes: Value Village, Alberta

I also got a tattoo since the last time I posted an outfit. I got it from Three Kings Tattoo in Greenpoint from the same guy who did my first tattoo on my arm (John). He did a great job, hurt like hell. It’s an oak tree, represents strength. I’m really deep.

Alright, have a good night :)

7.26.11

This was taken in my store, Only Hearts, by my manager Steph.

Dress: Free clothing exchange, NY

Shoes: Beacon’s Closet

I think this was supposed to be a skirt but I pull it up to my chest, belt it, and wear it as a dress. And don’t worry guys, I’m wearing shorts underneath.

Belt: Salvation Army, SC

Necklace: I forgot. I’ve had it for a really long time.

Ribbon: Mm, somewhere

I didn’t want to wrap this ribbon around my head and make a bow like I usually do, so I made a bunch of knots in it and pinned it to my hair with bobby pins. I like it. It’s more interesting to look at than the standard bow.

And that’s it, back to work!

7.24.11

Thank God for Melissa Gomez. She saved the day again by capturing my outfit when she saw me in the UCB Training Center. She told me to “work it” and I made this face. She laughed so I guess I didn’t work it.

I don’t know how to look sexy on purpose. I only know how to make smiley and goofy faces, so here’s a goofy face.

Grey Tank: Old Navy

Belt: Salvation Army, South Carolina

Bow: Dunno, I just have it.

Skirt: Hand made, from a Salvation Army in NC

Shoes: My old faithfuls from Beacon’s Closet

Glad this was recorded. Thanks, Gomez!

7.14.11

Off to the beach!

Back Pack: Found in apartment

I didn’t realize my back pack matched my swim suit until I put it on. Adorable, right? I have no idea wear the back pack came from, we just had a bunch in our apartment so I took one. I think someone used it for a sketch or something.

Swim Suit: Beacons Closet

This is one of those 50s style suits with the cone boobs. I don’t know if it was made in the 50s, probably not because it was cheap and the cones aren’t that pronounced. But I like it.

Pants: I can’t remember. Forever 21? Rainbow? A store like Forever 21 or Rainbow?

But these pants are easy breezy and great to throw over a swim suit.

Shoes: It doesn’t matter, I was at the beach!

This was taken by my good friend Josh when we were at Rockaway Beach. I had such a good time, I needed a trip to the beach. And I’ll probably be there next week too, see you there!

7.12.11

I heard colors like red, yellow and green make people hungry. That wasn’t the goal with this outfit, but that may have been the result.

Shirt: Value Village in Edmonton, Alberta

Belt: My mom’s closet

Shorts: Thrift store in NC/SC (during Doppelganger’s festival run)

Earring: Thrift store in Edmonton, Alberta

Neckalce: From my childhood jewelry box

Earring: Hand made, from an estate sale in Maryland

Bow Tie: Ralph Lauren, thrift store in Vancouver

Today I used an actual bow tie to put in my hair. This was the first time I’ve done it, but it was really easy.

Bow Tie Addition: I got a piece of string (cut from a romper because I didn’t want it there) and put it through the ends of the bow tie, tied it around my head and pinned the ends down with bobby pins. And my hair covered the string so you can’t see it or the bobby pins.

Shoes: CG from Beacon’s Closet

And that’s it! I’m off to make people hungry with my primary and secondary colors!

7.4.11 Happy Fourth of July!

Reppin’ America.

Belt: My mom’s closet

Dress: Atlantis Attic in Williamsburg Brooklyn

This dress was a little lose at the top when I bought it, but it’s been really lose lately (I think the elastic gave out at the top), so I tried to alter it so it fits tighter.

I’ve never done this before, but I think it turned out pretty well for my first try. I put on the dress inside out, pulled the extra material away from my body and placed pins in so the seam would be closer to my body. Then I sewed it down with my Singer sewing machine and hoped for the best.

It’s not perfect, but it’s good enough. And hopefully only I, and really skilled seamstresses, can notice the flaws.

Since I had my sewing machine out, I decided to finally sew my red bow. The material is from a dress I shortened a while ago. I would wrap in around my head and the frayed edges would leave little red specs in my hair, so I sewed down the sides so it looks legit.

Sunglasses: Forever 21

Red and Gold Earring: Value Village, Alberta

Cream and Gold Earring: Some other thrift store in Alberta

I have a lot of single earrings because I lose their matches, but I don’t want to get rid of the single earrings because they’re cute. So I’ve been wearing two different earrings to put them all to good use. I’ve been doing this for the past week, I may change my mind and hate it in another week, but I like it for now.

Shoes: Value Village, Alberta

These shoes were only $2, and they’re really comfortable. Guys, everything is better in Canada. We should go there right now.

Yep, I’m celebrating America by promoting Canada. Happy Canada Day!

6.24.11

This is the outfit I wore when Doppelganger performed in the Friars Club Improv Competition. This was taken backstage at the UCB Theatre.

Bow: From childhood

Necklace: Value Village, Alberta

Black off-the-shoulder top: Forever 21

Vest: Vancouver thrift store

High-waisted shorts: Decadence, Alberta

Belt: My mom’s closet

Shoes: Used to be my roommate’s

I tried to wear pieces from this outfit later this week and noticed I was missing a button on my vest, and had make up all over everything. We play hard when we perform. It was an awesome show :)

6.21.11

Another outfit from Canada!

Button Earrings: Hand made

Belt: Salvation Army, VA

Shirt: Value Village, Alberta

Romper: Decadence, Alberta

I can’t get over how much I loved this store. I found two rompers there. I’ve been looking for rompers that fit me for a year. And look how funky this one is!

Sandals: Claire’s (I know, it’s weird to get shoes from Claire’s. Their thing is accessories, but these were only $5. But they are pretty uncomfortable, so next time I shouldn’t be so cheap).

Nail Color: My friend Brenna bought this for me. It’s Neon Violet from American Apparel.

And that’s it! Not much else to say about this outfit, other than I got so many compliments on it today! When people asked where I got my romper, I got to do that thing where you can snobbishly say “Oh this? I got this in some store in some country you can’t go to right now.” I like bragging.

6.17.11 Edmonton, Alberta

Doppelganger was in Canada this past week! We were there performing in Rapid Fire Theatre’s 11th Annual Improvaganza in Edmonton, Alberta. We had a blast, and bought a lot of great vintage pieces.

I took this picture on the roof of our hotel. I don’t think I was supposed to go up there, but I just love roofs. This is also the outfit I wore when we shot this video at the festival: Can I Borrow Your Phone?

Belt: Salvation Army, VA

Romper: Decadence, Alberta

I love the pattern on this, and I love rompers. It’s a complete outfit with one piece and it’s easy to just throw on. Though, I don’t like that I have to basically get naked every time I use the bathroom, that’s a con with rompers. Other than that, they’re great.

And this store Decadence was A-MAZ-ING. It’s a branch of the Divine stores. I bought things from Divine as well, but I got more from Decadence. I spent more than I wanted, but I got items I wouldn’t have found anywhere else. Like this romper, for $9! But that was the cheapest thing I bought, everything else was around $25.

Shoes: Free, from a play

Tights: Old track and field tights

Bow: From childhood

Earrings: Value Village, Alberta

I think this earring was hand made, and it was only $1.99!

I bought these earrings too. I forgot the name of this store, it was right next to our hotel and full of lots of little trinkets.

Here’s Keisha leading the way into Value Village. This ended up being a long day of shopping.

And here’s Nicole’s outfit.

Pants: Value Village

Shirt: Value Village

Jacket: Decadence

I’m really excited to wear the rest of my purchases from the trip. You’ll definitely see more, until then…

6.12.11

I like this outfit. Though I didn’t like taking pictures of it, because I’m a crazy person (exaggeration) and took 182 pictures of it (slight exaggeration), but I’m only using six (truth).

You’ll notice the change in lighting because I took pictures before I left for work, and after I got home from work. It should never be this involved. But isn’t it cute?!

Pink Leopard Cardigan: Got it from my roommate. I think she’s crazy for not wanting it. I LOVE it.

Grey 3/4 Sleeve Shirt: Forever 21

Belt: My mom’s closet

Bow: Target or something

Skort (skirt/shorts): I LOVE SKORTS! Especially this one. It’s 100% genuine leather, and it’s made by Wilsons. You know, “The Leather Experts”.

I got it from Buffalo Exchange in San Francisco when Doppelganger went to SF Sketchfest earlier this year. This was a good Buffalo Exchange, not like the one here in Williamsburg that’s full of uppity bitches who wouldn’t know how to buy quality clothing if it hit them in the face. That’s what I did, I hit the buyers in the face with my clothing and they wouldn’t buy anything from me, not even store credit. The nerve.

Shoes: Rocketdog, from Rack Room Shoes

It probably took me five minutes to pick out this outfit and put it on my body. I spent half the day putting it on this blog. Time well spent.

6.10.11

This is the actual outfit I wore when I walked out into the world this morning. I took a bunch of pics on the roof without the vest, and then got self-conscious about my boobs when I saw them on the computer, so I added the vest. I know I shouldn’t hide them, but I don’t really want to talk about it. You’re not my therapist. Also, don’t mind the mess in my room. You’re not my mom.

Vest: Some army thrift store in Tribeca

Shirt: Used to belong to one of my roommates. We exchange a lot of clothes in my apartment. We just leave things in the living room for people to take, and whatever is left after a couple weeks gets donated. It’s a pretty cool system that none of us actually talk about or plan.

Leather Belt: From my mom’s closet

Shorts: I got these from a thrift store in Vancouver when Doppelganger was there for the Vancouver International Improv Festival. Hopefully we’ll be going back this October.

I forgot to bring my sunglasses to the roof, so I had to cover my eyes to protect them from the bright ass sun. Also, see what I’m talking about with the boobs? Whatever, I know I’m a prude.

Ribbon: This is left over material from a dress I shortened a while ago. I should’ve sewn the sides of it won’t get so stringy and leave red specs in my hair. I’ll do it later.

Necklace: Kohl’s

Leopard Print Earring: Forever 21

Shoes: Merona, from a Salvation Army in Indianapolis

And that’s it. Alright, I’m off to deal with my body image issues. Catch you later!

5.27.11

It’s 80 degrees outside! Time to put on the shorts!

Shorts: Thrift store in SC, or NC. One of the Carolinas Doppelganger was in during our festival travels earlier this year.

Belt: Also from one of the Carolinas

Blouse: Got it from an estate sale in MD. Some dead bitch used to wear this, now I wear it.

The blouse scoops low in the back, so I put this orange tank underneath so you can’t see my bra. And going braless isn’t an option for me.

Tank: My mom’s closet

Sunglasses: Claire’s

Ribbon: My mom bought it for me. Store unknown.

Shoes: CG, from Beacon’s Closet

I hope the weather stays like this for the next few months, but I doubt it. It’ll probably rain tomorrow. So I’m going to enjoy it now :)

Bye!

5.25.11

Here’s a country western look? An urban western look? Something.

I tried to bend low so you can see the whole look. Do I look awkward? Man I miss doing this on my roof. Soon…

Skirt: I’m pretty sure I got this at a free clothing exchange. I brought a bag of my unwanted clothes to a bar, and other people did the same, then we dumped it all out onto the tables and you could take whatever you want.

I did a few of these when I first moved to NY, and I would always walk away with way too much stuff. I got greedy and would take items that weren’t that great just because they were free. But then I became more selective when I realized I was coming home with more unwanted clothing than I was leaving at the bar.

I can’t remember how I heard about these clothing exchanges, but I’m sure you can find them on sites like Brokelyn and Free Williamsburg.

Belt: My mom’s closet

Vest: Found this at a thrift store in Vancouver when Doppelganger was there for the Vancouver International Improv Festival (our very first festival).

Shirt: Forever 21. Doppelganger had a weekly run at a theatre near on 45th Street, and we’d go to the Forever 21 in Times Square after every show because it doesn’t close until 2AM. So I have a lot of items from that store, but they’re a good place to go for cheap solid color tops.

Shoes: CG, my old faithfuls from Beacon’s Closet

Bow: From childhood

And that’s it! Buh-bye!!

5.21.11

I didn’t have time to document this outfit this morning, but huge thanks to Melissa Gomez for capturing this moment with her phone while we were at the Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden in Queens. She also caught my friend Nicole making a stupid face. No thanks to you, Nicky.

Shirt: Forever 21

Shorts: Community Thrift in SC

Belt: Salvation Army in VA

Tights: Only Hearts

Shoes: You can’t see them, but they’re my black Converse

Button Earrings: Hand made

Sunglasses: Claire’s

Ribbon: Target or something

Stupid face: Nicky

5.20.11

I wore overalls today because I want to feel like I’m five years old. Or a fashionable farmer. Or a five-year-old fashionable farmer.

Overalls: Beacon’s Closet

Shirt: My mom’s

Here’s a view from down low so you can see what’s going on below my knees.

Tights: Hue. I got them from the store where I work, Only Hearts.

Shoes: Steve Madden, got them from Beacon’s Closet…I shop there a lot.

Headband: You know, the one I always wear. I’ve had it since I was a kid.

Button Earrings: Hand made

Necklace: Kohl’s

The clasp on the necklace is broken so I have to wrap it around my head with out breaking it. I have a few necklaces like that, but that’s what I get for buying cheap jewelry.

One of these day I’ll invest in quality jewelry, but it’s not really a priority right now because I have to do things like pay for rent. You know, like an adult, so get off my back. I’m sorry, I don’t know why I was being so aggressive. You didn’t do anything. Let’s just forget it.

5.17.11

It’s rainy and gross outside, but I decided to look like Spring any way.

Crop Top: Some thrift store Doppelganger went to when we were in Vancouver.

Dress: It’s from Forever 21, but I got it at the Housing Works Warehouse Sale.

Belt: Salvation Army in VA

Shoes: From a thrift store in Indianapolis, only $8.

Tights: You can’t really see them because I forgot to get a good picture of them.

These are actually the tights I wore when I ran track in high school. They used to go under the heel, but I cut off the bottom when my legs got longer and kept wearing them.

This is me solemnly looking at the rain through the window.

Bow: From my childhood

Button Earrings: Hand made

It’s chilly outside! So I threw on this sweater thing that used to belong to my mom. The tag says Macy’s, but I don’t know if that’s where she got it.

Now I’m going to go outside and get wet…from the rain. Don’t be gross.

5.16.11

You can’t see it, but there’s a mannequin to my right and I was trying to look like her. So that’s why I was looking off into space, but then I cut her out of the picture and it doesn’t make sense. Whatever, you don’t get it.

And please don’t judge me and my roommates for having two TV sets in our living room. We don’t watch either of them.

Suade Jacket: Got this for $1 when the drama department at my college had a costume sale.

Shorts: Goodwill

Shirt: Forever 21

Belt: I’m not sure if this is a belt, but that’s how I wear it. And sometimes I wear it around my neck when I need a big ass chain for something.

I got it at an estate sale in Maryland. I think some old lady died and I bought a few items from her closest. She was stylish when she was living.

Tights: Only Hearts

Shoes: My dad’s friend bought them for me, but they’re Converse so you can get them wherever.

This is blurry because I was in a rush, and it’s artsy.

Ribbon: Target or something

Button Earrings: Hand made

That’s it! Off to run the world!

5.15.11

Yes! More blue bows! This is Diana, I know her from UCB and she obviously has great taste. She’s also a cool person because she wasn’t weirded out by the fact that I wanted to take this picture.

5.13.11

My friend Abby saw me out last night and realized she owns the same dress/shirt I was wearing yesterday. She wore it today and sent me this pic. The red bow is a great accent for this outfit! Thanks for proving that we’re more alike than I thought, Abby :)

5.12.11

I’m already running out of poses, so I pointed at something in the sky. Isn’t it interesting? Also, I took this picture on the side of my roof that has trees. Like it?

Button down top: The roommate who just moved out of our apartment left this in a bag of other goodies she didn’t want to take with her. Thanks, girl.

Grey tank: Old Navy

Belt: From my mom’s closet.

Shorts: Goodwill

Tights: Forever 21

I’m a big fan of the shorts over tights look. I know a lot of people aren’t, but who asked those people? I did this a lot over the winter because I can and I won’t let the temperature stifle my stylistic choices. I will wear shorts all year if I can help it.

Lace Ribbon: Mm, let’s say Target, but I don’t really remember. I’ve had it for a long time.

Bracelet: My friend works at the front desk at the Upright Citizens Brigade Training Center. This was left in the lost and found for a long time and she gave it to me.

If you train at UCB and recognize this as your bracelet, please don’t ask for it back. It’ll be really awkward when I tell you no, because I wear this all the time.

Sunglasses: Shoe repair store, $5

I described the story behind these glasses in an earlier post when I showed off my grandma glasses. Here’s the story if you don’t feel like scrolling:

I went there to get my shoes fixed, and then saw rows of old timey glasses hanging in the window. I asked the cobbler how much for each pair. He said “Oh, these things? Mm, five dollars.” And I thought “Five dollars?! These are treasures! Cobbler, do you know how much the average hipster would pay for these? I’ve seen pairs like this go for $30. You don’t realize that you’re sitting on a pile of gold right now?!”

But I didn’t say that because I didn’t want to pay more than $5 for these babies.

Shoes: Got these for free because they were a costume piece for a play. I think it’s okay that I took them. No one said I couldn’t.

And that’s it! Have a good day, I know I will!

5.10.11

Back on the roof!

Oh my goodness, please excuse the leopard print bra strap. PLEASE!

Belt: Salvation Army in South Carolina

Necklace: From my childhood jewelry box

Blouse: H&M, but I got it from A Repeat Performance

I was doing a show at PS 122 and saw this place right next door. They had a lot of cool nick nacks, and this shirt, so I bought it because it was only $3 and pretty.

Jade Bracelet: I got this from a street vendor in Bed-Stuy

Gold Bracelet: My step-mom gave this to me. I don’t think it’s real gold.

AND LOOK AT THESE PAISLEY PANTS!

I got these when Doppelganger was in South Carolina. We shopped at Community Thrift and I walked out like a champion. That was my first experience in a Community Thrift store and it was THE BEST. These pants were only $2! And I got a bunch other stuff too and paid $25 for all of it. My heart is racing just thinking about it.

Sunglasses: Claire’s

Ribbon: Derrrr, I don’t remember. I think my mom bought it for me. I don’t know where she would’ve bought this.

Shoes: CG, from Beacon’s Closet. I’ll probably wear these a lot this summer. They’re so comfortable and there are air holes for my feet!

Ok, I’m off to go walk on sunshine! G’bye!

5.9.11 Mother’s Day

I’m a day late on this. Like I said in my previous post, I haven’t had time for anything lately. But I couldn’t let Mother’s Day pass without recognizing my mom and her fashion.

A majority of my clothes and accessories have come from her closet, which has saved me money and time trying to figure out what styles work on my body.

I have a very fly mom and I get a lot of my innovation from her.

I also get a lot of my humor from her. For those of you who don’t know, I was born in Japan and that’s why this shirt is hilarious. My mom is the OG of comedy in our family.

Thanks for being such a big influence on my style, and thanks for everything. I love you, Mommy!

5.8.11

I’m actually posting this on 5.9.11. I didn’t have time to post this yesterday. I also didn’t have time to go to the roof yesterday so I did this in my apartment. Guys, the theme of this post is “I didn’t have time,”just so you know.

Yesterday was Mother’s Day, so I decided to look “motherly”? I don’t know, but it was perfect weather for this dress, so I wore it.

This is also the outfit I wore in the season finale episode for Broad City. You can check it out here!

Necklace: H&M

Dress: Goodwill in Charlottesville, VA

In April, I went back to my college (UVa) to see my improv group, Amuse-Bouche, in their last show of the year. I had a blast that weekend. The group had a great show, and I got this awesome dress to take home with me.

It fit me like a glove when I tried it on, though I want to shorten it. When I put it on yesterday morning, I forgot I didn’t hem it already. I haven’t had time to do it, and I didn’t have time to change my outfit before I walked out the door so I had to deal with the length. Guys, life is hard.

Ribbon for bow: Polish sewing shop down the street

Shoes: CG, from Beacon’s Closet

I got lazy and sat down to take this pic. I was tired! And I didn’t have time to do this while standing. Look, I got it done so that’s all that matters…I wasn’t yelling. You stop freaking out!

5.7.11

I was recently told that my new hairstyle resembles another funny lady’s style.

5.7.11

Today was a beautiful day again. Too bad I slept most of it away. Despite the debauchery last night, I woke up really early and was like “This is great! I’m going to get dressed and ready for the day and get so much accomplished!” I did get dressed, but then I went right back to sleep and missed most of the day.

And I slept in this outfit, but didn’t wrinkle it too much because I sleep like an angel. Floating.

Shirt: Another gem my friend Natasha tried to give away

Belt: Salvation Army in South Carolina

Skirt: Thrift store in San Francisco

Doppelganger did a lot of traveling earlier this year, and we thrifted in each city. That’s when I got the skirt and the belt.

I love high-waisted skirts/shorts/pants. I have a short torso and long legs and high-waisted things hide this, creating a flowing line down my body and accentuating my curvesssss.

Bow: Target? I can’t remember.

I got it a long time ago when I went through a different headband phase. This is one of the last remaining ribbons. I had a bunch and got rid of them when that phase ended because I thought they made me look young. Little did I know that would crave this look a few years later.

Necklace: Something from my childhood. I got this during one of my visits home and found it in my old jewelry box. Don’t know where it came from.

Glasses: I got these from a shoe repair shop in Prospect Park South, where I used to live.

But I didn’t say that. I didn’t want to pay more for these babies. So I bought these grandma glasses and a pair of cat-eye sunglasses.

Shoes: They’re Steve Madden, but I got them from Beacon’s Closet

Tights: Hue brand. I love these, they’re so comfortable. I bought them from my store Only Hearts, but a bunch of stores carry them.

And that’s it! Until next time…

5.6.11 Birthday!

IT’S MY BIRTHDAY!!! And this is my Pretty Princess birthday outfit, which means I put on a bunch of colors and look like a bag of Skittles.

And other than take pictures of my outfit today, I also shot a sketch. You can see my outfit in action in Nate Smith’sA White Guy Watches a Tyler Perry Movie For the First Time.

Dress: Housing Works (got it at their warehouse sale)

Belt: Used to be my mom’s

Tank: My mom either owned this shirt, or she bought it for me. I can’t remember, but I got it from her house.

I put the shirt under the dress because my boobs are too big to wear this dress without a bra or with a strapless bra. So I put the shirt underneath so I can still wear the bra without showing the straps.

Bow: From my childhood. I got this last time I was home.

Shell Bracelet: Got it on vacation in Jamaica.

Sunglasses: I don’t remember where I got these (Claire’s?). Wherever it was, they weren’t more than $5.

Button Earrings: Hand made. This time they’re purple.

Shoes: They’re CG (I don’t know that brand), but I got them from Beacon’s Closet

And that’s it! I had an awesome day today and I’m glad I was wearing this the whole time.

5.5.11 First

I did this on my roof because it was so nice out today! I also got a new camera (Nikon Coolpix L120) and I wanted to try it out. That’s the East River behind me and a view of the LES.

Here’s a closer view of the outfit. I cut out my face because I looked dead in the eyes.

Crop Mock Turtleneck Tee: Used to be my mom’s

Vest: From American Apparel, but I got it from my friend Natasha. She was going to give it away, so I took it.

Exchanging clothes amongst friends is a great way to get rid of your old stuff and get some sweet new duds for free. Even if you don’t have the same style, or wear the same size, you can probably figure out how to work with something from their throw away pile. I do it all the time :)

Belt: Salvation Army (in VA? I can’t remember)

Shorts: They’re Calvin Klein, but I got them from Beacon’s Closet

Tights: Only Hearts (I work for their store in Noho. This is the most expensive piece in the outfit, but I used that employee discount haaaayy)

Shoes: I got these shoes from a play I did last summer. So they were free :)

I also got the ribbon for my hair from a Polish owned craft store a couple blocks away. I’m really into bows right now, so you’ll be seeing more of these.

And I made my button earrings. I was given a big bag of buttons that my grandma would use when she made clothes. I made a few sets of earrings from those buttons by super gluing earring backs to them.

And that’s it! Pretty simple. Until next time…

5.5.11

I posted this a couple days ago, but I want to keep it here so it stays forever. I like dat BOW!
